Magda Gerber founder of Resources for Infant Educarers (AKA The RIE Approach)

Sorry if this sounds like a sales pitch, but I really can’t emphasize enough how well this approach works, and how beneficial it will be to you and your child in the near and distant future. You’ll thank Magda Gerber when your friends and relatives react with astonishment that your boy is so “un-clingy”, can entertain himself and is so fun to watch. They’ll chalk it up to his personality (and give you no credit at all). You’ll thank Magda when your son’s teachers comment that he is such a focused, self-confident, independent learner. You’ll thank her when your son only ever wants minimal help with homework. And you’ll thank her when he is requested for play dates by other children and their parents because he knows how to create play.
I've so enjoyed my time at these RIE classes! Raquel is an experienced mothercraft nanny of 20+ years and an excellent facilitator. In these classes my baby gets to play uninterrupted and as his mother, I've learned to respond rather than react to his vocalising - a hard earned skill which I believe I would have missed had it not been for these classes. That skill has carried through to everything we do at home and my child, now 8 months is happy, well adjusted, and sleeps soundly. Raquel is a wealth of knowledge and has advice on all of those niggling questions that come up as a parent. If you want the best for your child and your family, I highly recommend attending a trial class and seeing for yourself

Typical RIE style Playgroup & Parent Guidance class format:

RIE Classes are an observational playgroup follow the following approximate format; after a warm-in, the caregivers will sit back and watch the infants play with safe, developmentally appropriate, open-ended play objects.

There will be minimal interruption or discussion for the first portion of our time together unless your child needs/wants you and unless the facilitator needs to intervene to support the infant’s safety.

We will then have a conversation about what we observed and parents have an opportunity to ask questions about RIE parenting and infant development.

The pace will feel slow, calm, and mindful. The conversation is intended to feel supportive and informative.

Adults will benefit through connecting with a respectful and supportive community and gain confidence in their ability to raise their child in a way that aligns with their values.

Babies will benefit from uninterrupted play, the opportunity to move freely, and developmentally appropriate socialisation with peers.

Adults and babies will benefit from a strengthened relationship based on respect.

Adults and babies will benefit from having a designated time each week to slow down, be present and enjoy each other’s company.
