How to Introduce a Comforter To Your Baby.
What is the best way to introduce a comforter to a baby?
Cuskiboo Bamboo Comforters are the ideal transitional object to comfort your baby through change. In this video (with transcription for those who prefer reading) I answer these questions in detail:
What is the best way to introduce a comforter?
What age do you introduce a comforter?
How do you transition from dummy ( or any other unhelpful sleep associations such as rocking to sleep or feeding to sleep) to comforter?
Is it ever too late to introduce a comforter?
Hi, I’m Raquel Tara: Australia’s most experienced baby sleep consultant. I’ve helped doctors, teachers, celebrities, and coaches both in Australia and abroad. With my 1:1 tailor made virtual online programs, I can be your on-call baby sleep consultant in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Byron Bay, & anywhere in between.
With one-on-one baby sleep support programs, I’ve helped thousands of families across Australia and overseas in places like Canada, the USA, and the UK. If you’re having issues with your baby not sleeping, you might want to sign up for one of my programs. They offer standby support the very first evening, so I’m there to hold your hand through it. The support continues for another two weeks, so you’ll be sure to understand everything about supporting your baby to relax and let sleep come, as I like to call it. You can book a 1:1 tailor made support program here.
Today, I’m not talking so much about my program, but you can find out all about it on my website and the links are below. Today, I’m talking about how to introduce a comforter to your baby. Now, this is a Cuskiboo bamboo comforter, and they are absolutely beautiful.
I’ve been using them since I was a maternity nanny back in the day in London. The reason I mentioned that is not just because I love this brand, but also because when it comes to comforters, the idea is that your baby will actually get attached to this comforter. It will give them comfort, right? But your baby is an intelligent, sentient being. After a while, your baby will grow and start to learn that this particular sleep association (your beautiful little lovey, as some people call it) – what it looks like, what it smells like, what it feels like – they’ll start to get attached to that. And if you were to lose it (God forbid) or any other number of things that could happen, you would definitely want to be able to replace it.
So that’s why I always go for a brand that has been tried and tested, okay? A really experienced brand like these Cuskiboos – I think they’re absolutely fantastic.
The way that we introduce a comforter to our baby is…
1. Choose the right comforter:
Always get two identical ones.
Recommend plain colour, preferably cream, as they get washed frequently.
Opt for 100% cotton to avoid toxic fabrics.
Avoid cheap, yucky fabrics in comforters received as gifts.
Cuskiboo comforters are fantastic because they’re sustainable, beautiful, and breathable.
2. Prepare the comforters:
Wash both comforters with a gentle disinfectant wash.
Ideally, dry them in the sun.
Wrap them in a used bra and place them in a pillowcase for a week to absorb your scent.
3. Introduce the comforter gradually:
Under 7 months: Place the comforter between you and your baby during feeding, then move it to the side within eyesight.
Over 7 months: Introduce the comforter into the bedtime routine (check the linked video).
Don’t use it during playtime to avoid associating it with play.
Leave it in the cot when putting your baby down.
Remember:
Comforters are not magic sleep solutions.
They signal sleep and become transitory objects for babies.
Follow recommended safety guidelines based on your location.
I hope this was helpful! There’s a link to grab the Cuskiboos in my bio, and I look forward to assisting you with more baby sleep tips in the next video.
