Why You Should Lose The Dummy For Better Baby Sleep
Do you need a dummy for better baby sleep?
“ What’s your advice on getting rid of the dummy for a 7-month-old? My daughter loves her dummy and won’t sleep without it? ”
Should you remove the dummy for better baby sleep?
A dummy (pacifier) is commonly used to help babies settle. The sucking action is soothing, and understandably, you can’t always offer the breast for comfort.
But over time, the dummy often becomes something else.
It becomes something your baby needs in order to fall asleep — and stay asleep.
My advice is to lose the dummy for better baby sleep.
Why babies often sleep better without a dummy
Dummies can teach babies to rely on sucking in order to fall asleep.
This creates a pattern where:
Your baby falls asleep with the dummy
The dummy falls out
Your baby wakes and needs it replaced
Again and again.
Once this pattern is established, your baby isn’t struggling with sleep — she’s waiting for the dummy.
Remove the crutch, and she can learn to relax into sleep without it.
Just as she learned to sleep with a dummy, she can learn to sleep without one.
Is it better to go cold turkey or wean off the dummy?
Every baby is different.
As a mother, allow yourself to be guided by your intuition. Listen to your baby and notice how she responds.
If you remove the dummy altogether, does her sleep completely unravel — or does she begin adjusting after a few nights?
I generally recommend trying cold turkey first and observing what happens over a few nights.
If it feels too overwhelming for your baby, you can then move to a more gradual approach.
Real parent experiences removing the dummy
These are from mums who went through it:
Linda:
I did cold turkey when my daughter was 5 months as we got hit hard with the sleep regression. It’s the best thing we did as she is now able to self-settle and generally sleeps better. It’s easier to start at night as they naturally want to sleep. It’ll be up to a week of screaming but better to do when they’re still young. Good luck, I cried a lot that week too but worth the pain.
Sarah:
We also went with cold turkey at 5 months. Best decision I ever made. It didn’t take more than 3–4 days all up to completely forget about it. They learn quicker than we think. My girl isn’t still a great sleeper but she goes to sleep with no fuss now.
Don’t fear the tears when removing the dummy
It’s natural for a baby to protest when something changes.
Frustration, confusion, and protest are part of learning something new.
Your role as a parent is not to eliminate every tear.
It’s to stay present, calm, and responsive.
We are hardwired to react to crying — it’s uncomfortable for us. But crying is also communication.
When you stay with your baby, listen, and respond with calm energy, you are showing them that they are safe — even when things feel different.
Over time, this is what allows them to relax into sleep.
This is where most parents get stuck
Knowing the dummy needs to go is one thing. Following through consistently is another.
That’s where real-time support makes the difference.

When is the best time to remove the dummy?
The longer a sleep association is in place, the harder it is to remove.
If you are already noticing:
Frequent night waking
Dependence on replacing the dummy
Difficulty settling without it
Then your instinct is probably right.
The earlier you address it, the easier it tends to be.
Why personalised support can make this easier
Removing the dummy is often where sleep starts to improve — but it can also feel overwhelming to do on your own.
Every baby responds differently.
Which is why generic advice doesn’t always work.

FAQ
Does removing the dummy help babies sleep better?
Yes, in many cases. Dummies can become a sleep dependency, causing babies to wake frequently when it falls out. Removing it allows babies to learn to settle without needing it replaced.
When should I take the dummy away from my baby?
If your baby is relying on the dummy to fall asleep or waking frequently for it to be replaced, it may be time to remove it. Earlier is generally easier than waiting until the habit is deeply established.
Is it better to go cold turkey or wean off the dummy?
Both approaches can work. Cold turkey is often faster, while gradual weaning may feel gentler. The right approach depends on your baby and what you feel comfortable implementing consistently.
Will my baby cry when I remove the dummy?
Most babies will protest to some degree. This is a normal response to change, not a sign that something is wrong. With calm, consistent support, babies adapt.
Can someone help me remove the dummy for my baby?
Yes. In-home overnight baby sleep consultants can guide and implement changes in real time, making the process clearer and more manageable for parents.
