Ask Raquel Tara: Baby & Toddler Sleep Advice Inspired by RIE
Baby Sleep Support in Australia — What Actually Works When Your Baby Won’t Sleep
If your baby isn’t sleeping, you don’t need more conflicting advice — you need the right kind of support.
A new baby brings a level of exhaustion most parents are not prepared for. By the time families start searching for help, they are often overwhelmed, sleep deprived, and unsure who to trust.
For babies under 12 months, sleep can be resolved far more quickly than most people realise — when the right support is in place.
What Most “Baby Sleep Support” Looks Like
Most baby sleep support available online is based on advice.
Parents are given suggestions, routines, or strategies — and then left to try to implement them on their own, while already exhausted.
This often leads to:
- Inconsistency
- Second guessing
- Mixed results
- Or no real change at all
Even well-intentioned support groups can quickly become overwhelming, with too many opinions and no clear direction.
The RIE Approach to Infant Care
My work is influenced by the principles of Magda Gerber and the Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) approach to infant care.
RIE is centred around:
- Respecting your baby as an individual
- Understanding their communication cues
- Responding thoughtfully, rather than reactively
It encourages parents to step away from the noise of conflicting advice and instead develop a clear, consistent way of supporting their baby.
But philosophy alone does not resolve sleep.
Implementation does.
Why Free Advice Often Doesn’t Fix Sleep
Over the years, I’ve supported thousands of parents through online platforms and community spaces.
While helpful in the moment, advice alone rarely creates lasting change.
Because at 2am:
- You’re exhausted
- Your baby is crying
- And you’re left trying to figure out what to do
This is where most approaches fall apart.
What Actually Works
Real baby sleep support is not about more information.
It’s about having someone experienced come into your home and carry out the process properly.
This is where my work is different.
I provide in-home, overnight baby sleep support — where the work is done for you, while you sleep.
- I work directly with your baby overnight
- I implement a clear and consistent approach in real time
- I support feeds, resettling, and sleep progression throughout the night
- You are able to step back and rest
This allows sleep to be established properly, in your baby’s own environment — which is why it holds once I leave.

If You’re Looking for Real Support
Most families who reach out to me have already tried multiple approaches.
They’re no longer looking for more advice.
They want someone to come in and sort it out properly — and to know that when the stay is complete, their baby is sleeping and they understand exactly what to do moving forward.
If your baby is under 12 months, this is absolutely achievable.
